USA vs. Honduras

Tonight was a big night here in Honduras. As most of you probably know soccer is king here in Latin America (and actually most of the world outside of the US and maybe Canada), and tonight was an importanat game in the tournament leading up to the World Cup. It was also a tense night for us here since that game was between the United States and Honduras. We went and watched the game in the same place that we have been watching all the games - the hotel restaurant on a big screen- and tonight it was packed! It was standing room only, with a tiny herd of Americans standing in the corner trying not to look conspicuous. At the beginning of the game it looked like the U.S. might be in for another repeat of the Costa Rica game (where we lost fairly badly) because Honduras scored a goal in the first 10 minutes. However the U.S. came back to win amidst oooooo's aahhhhh's and shouts of "penalty" - the passion runs high for games. So after quitetly celebrating in my heart, and then telling a couple of Honduran friends to stop crying, we made our exit. And though the majority of Americans in the U.S. probably have no idea that we won, let alone that we have a soccer team, it was a good night - though in secret.

Oh yeah I almost forgot, shortly after returning home we were punished for winning, and our electricty "went out" ; )
